Hong Kong Tennis Masters Cup 2007
Jan 2007
Conclusion
After successfully hosting the Classic Indoor Doubles for three successive years, The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club took up the challenge to host the first ever Hong Kong Tennis Masters Cup 2007. The event turned out to be a real success.
The final day kicked off with the Parent & Child final, where Stanley and Justin To defeated Joseph and Tyler Leung by 6-3, 7-5. It was the warmest match of the day. We witnessed the sweet family bonding in both teams.
The Doubles and Singles final matches were a real play to all.The crowd gathered court-side to support Henry So and Rong Ma on their 6-2, 6-3 win over the defending champions Jamie Holmes and Jason Lijewski. Competition was fierce with near perfect team work and co-ordination from So and Ma prevailing.
Wayne Wong triumphed 6-2, 6-3 over Hong Kong's Current No. 1 player Yu Hiu Tung in the Singles final competition. Wong, with slice backhands and approaches to the net complimenting his baseline game had too much variety for his baseline counter-punching opponent, leading to a convincing win and a grand prize of HK$57,000.

Moneys Raised
A total of $18,789.10, raised from the selling of raffle tickets for our Hong Kong Tennis Masters Cup, will go towards ORBIS for saving sight worldwide. Furthermore entry fees totalling $12,000 from the Parent & Child Doubles competition was presented to the HKTA President Mr. Kenneth Tsui for the Hong Kong Tennis Association Junior Development Programme. We also thank Kevin Kung for his generosity. Kevin, Hong Kong's No.1 Junior Boys player for 18yrs and under in 2006 has offered his prize money of $8,000 to the Hong Kong Tennis Association for Junior Development. By doing this, Kevin can keep his amateur status as a player to pursue his dreams of playing college tennis in the United States.
Overview
After a three-year success of hosting its Classic Indoor Doubles, The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club will be hosting the first ever Tennis Masters Cup in Hong Kong in January 2007 to mark the first in a series of celebrations honoring the Club's 25th anniversary.
We will see the cream of local tennis talents battle it out in the ultimate grand slam over a two weekend period. The tournament categories this year includes: a Men's Singles, a Men's Doubles and a charity Parent & Child Doubles event.
Whilst the Men's Doubles tournament will be by invitation only, the qualification criteria for the Men's Singles tournament follows the usual Masters Cup system, in so far as 6 out of the 8 men taking part, must first qualify by winning either: the Hong Kong National Tennis Championship 2006, the CRC Open 2006 and the SCAA Open Championships 2006 tennis tournaments; or be one of the top three players in the December 2006 HKTA Open Ranking system. So this really sets the stage for a much tougher tennis competition, and will no doubt prove to be an even more thrilling display of top tennis for spectators!
The preliminary rounds are scheduled to take place over the first weekend on Saturday 13 and Sunday, 14 January, with the grandslam finale weekend on Saturday, 20 and Sunday, 21 January.
The Parent and Child Doubles Tournament will be open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. The maximum number of entrants is 32 pairs, with entry fees of $2,000 per pair. The money raised will go to the HKTA for junior development.
The prize purse will be the largest in town at a total of HK$250,000 (Singles - HK$160,000 and Doubles - HK$90,000). We believe this will further entice the whole tournament.
